Double Bass Lessons: The Rhythmic Heart of the Ensemble

The double bass is the biggest and lowest-pitched member of the string family. It provides a powerful and foundational sound. This sound anchors an entire orchestra, jazz combo, or rock band. Players produce its majestic sound by drawing a bow across its strings (arco) or by plucking them with their fingers (pizzicato).

The Art of the Double Bass

Playing the double bass is a rewarding experience. Its deep, resonant voice makes it a truly soulful instrument. Our double bass lessons will teach you the techniques you need to play. You will learn to control your posture, develop your bowing and plucking, and produce a clear tone. In addition, you will learn to move your fingers along the large fingerboard with precision.

As you progress, you will develop the skills to perform these works with passion. This will give you the confidence to perform in many different settings.

This is a double bass, it's the largest in the violin and string family!

Cello vs Double Bass: Are there any differences?

Although the double bass and cello are often seated together in orchestras and share a similar shape, they are quite different. The cello is tuned in perfect fifths, like a violin, and is known for its lyrical, singing voice. In contrast, the double bass is much larger and is tuned in perfect fourths, giving it a much deeper and more foundational sound. While the cello often plays the melody, the double bass typically provides the rhythmic and harmonic support, serving as the powerful anchor of the ensemble.

Due to its size and the physical demands of playing, we recommend beginning double bass lessons for students who are 10 years of age or older. However, younger students can still begin on smaller-sized instruments.

In addition, you will also learn about famous players who have defined its sound and style. These include the classical virtuoso Gary Karr, the jazz legend Charlie Haden, and the versatile Edgar Meyer. These players have shown the double bass’s potential in both solo and group performances.

Our curriculum for double bass lessons is designed to immerse students in the instrument’s rich and beautiful music. We explore famous pieces that show the double bass’s range and technical skills. This includes music from symphonies by Beethoven and Mahler, and jazz standards by Miles Davis. We will also explore brilliant solo works like Giovanni Bottesini’s Concerto No. 2 and Serge Koussevitzky’s Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra.
