Meet Stephen Lam: Conductor, Performer, and Educator
Mr. Stephen Y.S. Lam received his Master of Arts in Music with distinction, majoring in Choral Conducting, from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2007. He also earned his Bachelor of Music degree in viola performance from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2002.
Stephen Lam has over 10 years of professional musical experience as a music educator, conductor, performer, recording musician, and artistic director. During his studies, he was the principal of the violas in the orchestra of the Academy, the Baptist University Symphony Orchestra, and Collegium Musicum Hong Kong, and he performed at the Hong Kong Government House and overseas. He was the first graduate in the Baptist University’s history to conduct the university orchestra during the Graduation Ceremony.
A Distinguished Alumnus and Guest Conductor
As an Alumnus of the University, Mr. Stephen Lam was an active member of the orchestra. He was appointed by the Conductor as the Concertmaster and Assistant Conductor for concerts held in 2007 and 2008, respectively. He also served as the Guest Conductor of the Chamber Orchestra of the Baptist University between 2013 and 2015. As one of the founding members of the Diocesan Alumni Orchestra, he had the honor of performing at the Musikverein of Vienna during the Vienna Tour 2018.
Commitment to Music Education
Currently, Stephen Lam collaborates with local and international schools in Hong Kong as a resident violin instructor. His extensive experience in both performance and conducting allows him to bring a unique perspective to his students. He not only focuses on technical proficiency but also instills in them a deep appreciation for the collaborative nature of music. His friendly approach and passion for teaching make him an inspiring mentor for young musicians, nurturing their talents and helping them achieve their potential. His dedication to his craft is evident in the achievements of his students.
